When people think of the ten most densely populated cities in the United States, most would say they are in the Northeast as the downtowns are much larger and the inner cities have a higher density. Geographically cities have become larger as they include the automobile adapted suburbs making more of the density occurring in the West.

New York City, NY and Los Angeles

New York City is one of the most populated cities in the United States and a gateway for legal immigration to the U.S. and a global power city. It sits on one of the world’s largest natural harbours and consists of five boroughs. The boroughs each contain their own distinct neighbourhoods. Los Angeles covers half the land area of New York and holds a population of 12.2 million people, making its density 6,999 people per square mile. While the core of the city is less dense than New York, when you look at its suburbs it becomes twice as dense.

San Francisco is considered the commercial, financial and cultural center of Northern California. Its land area is about 46.9 square miles and density of population is 18,187 people per square mile. It comes in as the second most densely populated city in the United States when considering New York and Los Angeles holding number one.

Salt Lake City is one of only two major urban areas located in the Great Basin in Nevada. It is referred to as the largest city in the Intermountain West. The density of this city is at 1,689 people per square mile.

New Orleans
