The Scandinavian region is an excellent choice for an alternative holiday destination – at any time of year. It’s a beautiful part of the world, and each of the countries has its own personality that has to be experienced. So, if you want a holiday with a difference, why not think about one of these three great places?

Akureyri, Iceland

Although most travellers will think of Reykjavik when Iceland is mentioned, Akureyri is an excellent alternative. It’s a small city but big on culture and leisure, making it an exceptional choice for a city break, particularly for the more adventurous. You can watch whales in nearby Husavik – the best time to go is between May and September. There are some impressive lava fields, too, and geothermal mud pools to visit in the Lake Myvatn area that are simply stunning to see.

Top Tip: Head to Iceland for some great adventures in winter months. It’s the best chance you might get to see the spectacular Northern Lights in all of their glory.

Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm, Sweden’s cosmopolitan capital, is a thoroughly modern city based in historic surroundings. Stockholm is part of an archipelago of islands and has lush green settings and beautiful amber-hued buildings. Combined with the medieval streets and shimmering waters that surround it, it’s an utterly fantastic place.

Each of the islands has its unique atmosphere. However, overall it’s great for anyone looking for high culture and history, or fun activities indoors and out. Stockholm also has a vibrant nightlife and is without doubt one of Europe’s coolest cities.

Top Tip: Take a day to stroll around this incredibly beautiful city on foot to see all its charms. There are plenty of small shops selling everything from on-trend fashion to Viking collectibles.

Bergen, Norway

Bergen is one of the most underrated destinations in Norway, which is pretty underrated itself. Bergen is on the coast of this beautiful country, and it is surrounded by thick green forests. In our eyes, that makes it the perfect combination for coastal and woodland lovers. Not only that, but it’s a beautifully old place, and the cafe-lined cobbled streets are simply stunning. Even the city’s airport is a stunner!

Those of a cultural bent will also enjoy what Bergen has to offer. There are loads of museums and historic landmarks to discover – and it’s close to the incredible Hanseatic quarter in Bryggen. So, whether you are into hiking, relaxing in a cafe watching the world go by, or just somewhere different to go, Bergen has a lot to offer.

Top Tip: If you want to enjoy the very best weather, it’s best to go between mid-June and the end of August. However, Bergen is still a special place during winter. The Norwegian Christmas celebrations are fantastic. There’s no doubt about it. If you’re looking for somewhere a little different for your next holiday, then consider Scandinavia. Also, it doesn’t matter what time of year you go. Yes, it’s cold in the winter, but if you wrap up warm it’s a great place to experience. And, during the summer months, the long days are perfect for experiencing the gentle way of life.
