Spain is truly a beautiful country with its many white wash quaint coastal towns and village steeped in culture and history. It’s not difficult to see why many expats, especially from the UK move to Spain each year enticed by the warm climate and healthier lifestyle. For those who are thinking about a possible move to Spain or an investment opportunity, here we have showcased 5 of our favourite Spanish towns.

1. Cadaqués

The stunning town of Cadaqués located in the province of Girona, Catalonia is only a two-and-a-quarter hour drive from Barcelona, and thus it is very accessible and not only attracts tourists but people who want a second home for weekends and summers.

In 2002, Cadaqués had an official population of 2,612, but up to ten times as many people can live in the town during the peak of the summer tourism season.

Cadaques is famous for art and the town inspired both Picasso and Salvador Dalí who were drawn to the area’s incredible light and sea breezes. The area is also a favourite spot with weekenders from Barcelona and visitors from farther afield. The town has been developed carefully over the years and retains its charm.

2. Javea

Javea (also known as Xàbia) is a picturesque coastal town in the comarca of Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante (about 60 miles North of Alicante) on the Costa Blanca. Javea is well located for both Alicante and Valencia airports as both are just over an hour’s drive away. There are 3 main areas of Javea – Javea’s Arenal Beach, Javea Port, and Javea Old Town.

Each of these areas has a different character and importance to the town of Javea – the Arenal is the main beach with many bars and restaurants. Javea Port is a functioning fishing area with some great tapas bars and shops and the old town is very much the ‘real Spain’ of narrow streets, churches and markets.

Property for sale in Javea is still popular despite the ongoing Spanish property crisis and offers a lovely place for a second home or for those especially here in the UK looking to become expats.

3. Nerja

Nerja, close to Malaga is a small town of approx 14,000 people which triples in population in the summer months. White wash villages, stunning cliffs and amazing coves make this town one of the most desirable area for Expats to live. One of the most popular places to visit in Nerja is Nerja caves which are Spain’s 3rd most visited tourist attraction.

4. Frigiliana

Frigiliana is a quaint, peaceful town in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. Another example if a white wash Spanish village with a local butcher, fishmonger and baker.

The mountain views of the sea coast from Frigiliana are breathtaking.

5. Cudillero

Cudillero is a quaint small village and fishing port in the Principality of Asturias, Spain. The picturesque fishing port sits on the side of a mountain with stunning hanging houses with eaves and brightly-coloured windows perched on a horseshoe of steep cliffs around the port. It has many routes with viewpoints, among which it is worth mentioning the walk to the lighthouse, La Garita, La Atalaya or El Pico. Its two most important buildings are the Gothic parish church, which dates from the 16th century and contains wonderful baroque carvings; and the chapel of Humilladero, which is the oldest structure in town. The fishermen’s taverns, which are located in a narrow cobbled square next to the sea, are the main tourist attraction.

Any of these towns would be a lovely place to live. They are all very picturesque, some natural and others architectural, but all have views and character that is unique to Spain.
