Peru is a destination that I’ve always wanted to visit ever since I was a child and gazed at pictures of Machu Picchu in a book my grandparents gave me. One day I will go but until then I continue to learn more about this fascinating place of history, nature and adventure. Reading and watching national geographic programmes have shown modern Peru to have such variety, from ancient monuments to luxury modern hotels.
From cosmopolitan cities buzzing with restaurants, art and culture to stunning mountains and rivers where you can canoe, go sandboarding in the coastal dunes or trek the Inca trail. If you’re more of a beach bunny, there are miles of incredible beaches, and some of the world’s finest hotels.
The Peru that is familiar with most of us is the historic Machu Picchu, a 15th-century Inca site located 2,430 metres above sea level and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.
Just one of the many reasons why Peru is becoming a popular destination for those looking for something a little bit special from a holiday.
