There is always a lot to think about when you’re planning a holiday for the whole family – especially if you’ve got toddlers in tow. So, if you’re looking for somewhere that promises good weather, has plenty of attractions and is reasonably close to the UK, I think Turkey ticks all the boxes.

Of course, there are numerous resorts in the country and not all of them are ideal for families. Icmeler, however, is one example of a Turkish destination that will suit parents and children down to the ground.
If you’re wondering why, here are a few reasons to consider Icmeler for your next family getaway.

1. Easy to reach

We all know that one of the most stressful parts of any holiday is actually reaching your destination – something that’s only compounded when you have to keep an eye on your kids as well. So, I think it’s important to choose a spot that’s relatively easy to reach from the UK.
Icmeler is two hours away from Dalaman Airport in Turkey and there are regular flights from the UK to this aviation hub. It typically takes around four hours to travel from London to Dalaman, so it’s a manageable length of flight, even if you’ve got small children.

2. Safe beaches

Spending a day or two at the beach is a must when you stay in Icmeler, as it’s on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast and boasts beautiful, clear waters and a lovely sandy bay. What’s particularly great about Icmeler’s beach is that the crescent of sand is relatively sheltered and the water here is quite shallow, so it’s perfect if little ones want to splash around.

There are numerous water sports on offer here, too, which can keep older kids occupied. Windsurfing, parasailing, pedalo rides and jet skiing are among the activities you can have a go at if you’re feeling energetic.
In my opinion, though, the thing that makes the beach at Icmeler particularly good for families is that the swimmers are separated from the water sports, so you and the children can go for a dip in safety without worrying about having to look out for windsurfers or pedaloes while you’re in the water.

3. Lots of excursions

Of course, you probably won’t be content to spend your entire holiday in one place, especially as there’s so much to see in the surrounding area. Going on a boat trip for a day is a fantastic way to appreciate this stretch of Turkey’s coastline – and to see some of the region’s most fascinating attractions.

For example, you can head to Cleopatra’s Island, where you’ll find ruins dating from the Roman and Hellenistic periods, as well as pristine beaches of golden sand. Legend has it that Mark Anthony had this sand shipped specially from the Red Sea for Cleopatra.

Another option for a daytrip is Dalyan, a pretty town that is located on the estuary of the Dalyan River. The town itself is relatively small, but nearby are the remains of the ancient city of Caunos, which dates from the 2nd century BC. There are some amazing ruins here, with an amphitheatre, Roman baths and a temple dedicated to Apollo among the buildings you’ll find.

If you and your kids love wildlife, meanwhile, you should also spend a few hours at Iztuzu Beach. This is a completely undeveloped stretch of coast because it is a nesting site for loggerhead turtles.
